Where to Eat Along the Murray River

The Murray River is home to some of the best farming land in Australia, which means it’s also home to some of the best eats in town. Fresh fish from the river, local vineyards, orchards and olive groves abound, all supplying produce to the local restaurants. It’s not known as Australia’s food basket for nothing! Here’s just a few of the spots we love to chow down at:

Feast Street (a.k.a. Langtree Avenue)
Located on the banks of the Murray in Mildura, Feast Street is home to swanky wine bars, delicious delis and cool cafes. Any of the stops along this street are perfect for dining, drinking and watching the river swirl by. If you’re closer to Echuca, the spot to visit is the Fine Dining District which features wineries, restaurants and more.

Stefano’s
Stefano’s is probably the most well-known restaurant in the region with a strong focus on slow food and local produce. It’s been awarded two chef’s hats by the Age Good Food Guide for its delicious Italian fare. You can also buy a range of preserves, oils and vinegars to bring the taste of the Murray home.

Farmers Markets
If you prefer to get your produce straight from the source, be sure to stop by the farm-gate kiosks selling olive oil, fruits and vegetables, honey and cheeses along the route of the Murray. You can also stop by the Albury Wodonga Farmers Markets every Saturday.

Cape Horn Vineyard
The Murray’s not just famous for its food. The wine is also a must try when on an eating and drinking tour of the region. The Cape Horn vineyard has over 150 years of history and are known for their verdelho, shiraz and their olive oil!

The American Hotel
If pub grub is more your style, you won’t be disappointed with the fare on offer along the Murray. The American claims to be the oldest pub in the region and it’s been recently refurbished to feature a rooftop bar and recycled timbers from the original port of Echuca Wharf.

Hector’s on the Wharf
Named after a local character, Hector was a fisherman who lived on a wooden boat by the Goolwa Wharf for more than 40 years, Hectors on the Wharf is one of the Murray’s many riverfront dining options. Stop by for tapas and a view.

The River Deck
If you can’t make it through the day without a cup of joe, one of the Murray’s many cafes will be sure to satisfy. The River Deck specialises in regional food and you’ll be able to sip while overlooking mature red gums, Dutch elms and London plane trees. There’s also a children’s playground to keep the kids entertained.
