Phillip Island is home to some of the best wildlife watching in Australia, including the world’s smallest penguin, birds galore and migrating whales. If you’re a nature junkie there’s no better place to get up close and personal than on Phillip Island! Since we love everything furry, feathered and finned we’ve rounded up the best animal adventures on Phillip Island.

  1. Tuck the world’s smallest penguin into bed for the night
Every night at sunset the Little Penguins make their way back to their burrows after a busy day of fishing. You can watch their daily migration from elevated viewing platforms, boardwalks or from the 70-person underground viewing room that gets you to eye level with the penguins. Once the Little Penguins are tucked up in bed for the night you can explore the interactive exhibits in the visitors centre or take in the surrounding scenery.

If you’re a real penguin fan, the Ultimate Penguin Tour takes just 10 people to a secluded beach to watch the little critters through night vision goggles with ranger commentary.

  1. Eyeball a koala from the tree tops
The Koala Conservation Centre houses koalas in their natural habitat and you can wander through the treetops on elevated boardwalks to say hello! There’s a 600m and 800m loop that make for an easy stroll as well as interactive displays in the visitors centre that showcase the work the centre is doing to help protect this iconic Australian animal. Keep your eyes peeled for wallabies, echidnas and native birds while you’re exploring.

  1. Take an eco boat tour along the coastline
There are a number of boat tour options along the coastline of Phillip Island, so choose your own adventure. You could be treated to an encounter with one of Australia’s largest fur seal colonies, spectacular bird watching near the village of Rhyll and plenty of marine life off the granite cliffs of Woolamai.

  1. Get a taste of 1850’s farm animal life
Churchill Island Heritage Farm is also home to plenty of animals and shows visitors what it was like to work the land during Australia’s early settlement – it was the first farm in Victoria! Milk a cow, shear a sheep and watch working dogs in action, or for a more native Australian focus visit the Wadjil’garook Wetland to learn about Indigenous culture and wetland birds.
